Research shows that as many as 65% of our students are not reading at their proficient grade levels. It is with this knowledge in mind that I've implemented a specialized Reading Formula that has been tested and proven to guarantee strong results to students from Beginner level to Struggling readers. Here is a detailed overview of the topics that will be covered in each class: WEEK 1 [SYNTHETIC PHONICS] Blending of sounds to make a word and enable children to read. DAY 1 - Blending & Segmenting: ** Student should already master letter sounds to be able to successfully evolve to stage two phonics - Decoding or ‘breaking’ words into separate sounds, which can then be blended together to read an unknown word. For instance, we will use these eight letters/sounds (S, A, T, P, I, N, M, D) to help students practice their skills with word decoding & phonics. DAY 2 - Blending & Segmenting: This class will reinforce learning how to blend and decode words through a fun & exciting word game I've researched called SWITCH IT UP! (Using assorted letters and sounds to form new words). This is where students are able to strengthen & sharpen quite a few skills all at once; including but not limited to the following. Sound Based Decoding, Phonological Awareness, Phonemic Awareness, Spelling, High-frequency words, Vocabulary. WEEK 2 [ CONSONANTS & VOWELS] DAY 1 - Short vowel & consonants: First students will learn the specific differences between Vowels & Consonant letters followed by an in-depth discussion about vowels. After which, students will be encouraged to once again work on their sound-based decoding skills to blend and segment short vowel spelling patterns from each respective short vowel (a, e, i, o, u). students will then learn how to read a short story on their own which is vital for Comprehension, Engagement & Reading Fluency. DAY 2 - Long Vowels + Silent E: Students will learn that there's a difference in each letter sound, as well as various spelling patterns in Long Vowel words. Furthermore, students will get to understand the difference much better between the vowels by word comparison of the respective vowel. We will read a special story & exercise to complete this lesson. WEEK 3 [DIAGRAPH BLENDS] DAY 1 - This is a combination of two letters representing one sound. We will practice pronouncing the most common diagraphs- SH, CH, TH, WH. DAY 2 - We will review the four sounds in a fun reversed game where the students will get the chance to quiz me on various words of their choice; while I try to match the correct beginning sound. WEEK 4 [SYLLABLES & COMPOUND WORDS] DAY 1 - Syllable is a word part & is used to make up words. We'll play a string of games after our discussion to further breakdown the comprehension behind Syllables. 1). The clapping game, 2). the jaw effect to explore 1-3 syllabic words..as a means to help the Audio, visual and Kinecthic learners connect to the sounds they hear in a spoken word & how that can be broken down easily to improve and enhance reading and writing. Understanding these two concepts will help students DAY 2 - Similarly, Compound words share the same concept in terms of decoding where but it has slightly different elements "when two or more words are joined together forming an entirely new word + meaning." For this class we'll start off with a brief introduction to the topic to understand the word, then students will watch an amazing Audiovisual aid presentation that gives a variety of examples of compound words. In addition, will conclude by having our own interaction and fun session - where I will show students a series of flashcards as a pair and they will have to put the two words together to form their own compound words. WEEK 5 [HOMONYMS or MULTIPLE MEANING WORDS] DAY 1 - Multiple meaning words are a very important part of Reading Fluency. They allow readers to develop and practice their linguistic flexibility, with the ability to understand and use words in a variety of ways. We will unveil many examples by reviewing and comparing sentences and images of multiple meaning words. DAY 2 - Students will grasp that these words have the same spelling and pronunciation but different meanings. This is important to understand reading strategies such as "main ideas, as well as context and clue in stories. WEEK 6 [QUESTION WORDS + SENTENCES] THE FINALE' - Hurray!! DAY 1: As we know, one main part of reading comprehension is having sufficient vocabulary awareness. Hence, our final activities will focus mainly on comprehension, plus strategies when we read. Good readers ask questions while reading or listening to a story. Good readers notice the characters (WHO?), setting (WHERE? WHEN? WHY?), The Plot (WHAT is happening?), and HOW the characters are feeling. DAY 2: I will revisit all the reading materials used in prior classes in a Read-a-long session with students. For them to accurately understand written materials by decoding what they read and then making connections between what they read, already know, and think deeply about. *** In order to strengthen comprehension - I will read students a short story at the end of each lesson so that they're able to apply what they've learned to context. I will check for comprehension as students will be expected to summarize the short stories. THANK YOU! I HOPE TO SEE YOU SOON :-)
