Welcome to Reading Detectives! Come and join this fun, interactive class as we use games, word sorts, letter tiles, dry-erase boards, and decodable stories/poems to build a strong phonics foundation. Working in a small group of 3-5 learners, we’ll have fun playing, learning, and working together. About half-way through our lesson, we will take a short “brain break.” While blending, segmenting, reading, spelling, and writing words, your child will learn the phonics patterns that form the building blocks of our language. Learners in Level B will quickly review consonants, short vowels, consonant blends and digraphs, vowel teams, and word chunks taught in Reading Detectives--Level A. Then we progress into more advanced phonics including more vowel patterns, soft consonants, and word endings. We will practice putting these together to build multi-syllable words. We’ll continue reviewing and learning additional sight words and irregular words that don’t follow the phonics rules. We'll practice these words in a decodable short story/poem. The decodable readers are provided as printables each week for use in class and also as quick fluency homework. Practicing the same short passage daily improves reading fluency and recognition of phonics patterns and sight words. BE SURE TO SAVE THESE PRINTABLES. As we move through advanced phonics patterns, we’ll sort and write words according to those patterns. Key sentences will be taught as mnemonic devices to help learners recall the various spellings of long vowel sounds (e.g. long /o/ sound spelled as in boat, joke, toe). Printables will be provided in the Outschool classroom the Sunday before each class. Please keep a folder or notebook for your child to SAVE these printables. We will refer back to them. They are also great for reference as your child learns to spell more long vowel words. He/She can add new words to the lists and refer to them when writing. Finally, we’ll end each class by practicing together a new guided-reading passage. This short poem or story should be used between classes to practice reading and phonics fluency. Then, it should be kept in the printables folder or notebook (see supplies). We'll use them again for rereading and fluency practice in the next class session. PARENTS: "Reading Detectives" is a streamlined course in phonics and reading fluency. It's designed to quickly and successfully build your child's word-decoding and sound-blending skills in order to read, spell, and write words more fluently. Children ages 6-9 (grades 1-3) SHOULD ALREADY KNOW all consonant sounds and short vowel sounds. Level B reviews this information quickly and moves into long-vowel patterns and other advanced phonics patterns. Week 1 Lesson 1: Introductions/ice-breaker activity/meet new friends/class expectations Review short vowels, /ar, or/, and consonants; digraphs, double consonants; sight words from today's decodable reader Lesson 2: long /o/ vowel teams; sight words from today's decodable reader Week 2 Lesson 3: long /e/ vowel teams; sight words from decodable reader Lesson 4: long /a/ vowel teams; sight words from decodable reader Week 3 Lesson 5: long /i/ vowel teams; sight words from decodable reader Lesson 6: vowel + e; sight words from decodable reader Week 4 Lesson 7: r-controlled vowels; sight words from decodable reader Lesson 8: vowel teams /ou, ow/; sight words from decodable reader Week 5 Lesson 9: vowel teams /oo/ sounds; sight words from decodable reader Lesson 10: vowel teams /au, oy/ sounds; sight words from decodable reader Week 6 Lesson 11: soft /c, g/; sight word review Lesson 12: word endings; sight word review

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello, Outschool families. I’m glad to meet you, and I love teaching! I enjoy teaching Reading and Language Arts, including: phonics, reading comprehension and fluency, sight words, literature, and writing. I especially like integrating these skills into Science and Social Studies thematic units. This makes learning Language Arts skills even more fun for my students.
I am a certified teacher in grades K-6, with a degree in Early Childhood and Elementary Education from the University of Tennessee. I taught grades K-5 in public schools for 29 years. I currently work as a Reading tutor in a local elementary school and teach online classes for Outschool.
I love teaching animal science and enjoyed teaching children, ages 6-10, in summer zoo camps for 3 summers at our local zoo. I also worked for 5 years as an assistant editor and a writer of preschool curriculum for a large publisher. I am TESOL certified and taught English language learners online for 3 years.
In class, my goal is to determine each child’s needs and interests and help him/her progress from there. Because students have many different learning styles, I use a variety of teaching strategies. I want all my learners to feel at ease in class, have fun, and enjoy learning without feeling it’s too difficult. I enjoy building rapport with my students and their families. When class ends, I want each child to be proud of what he/she learned and be excited about coming back to class again soon! One of the most rewarding things about teaching (for me) is watching my students make progress and learn to love Reading.
My family and I live near the mountains and enjoy going there in our free time or on vacation. I love being outdoors and spending time with our kids and grandkids. We have three pets: a young Cattle Dog who sometimes drops by class, a friendly Ball Python snake, and a Yellow-Bellied Slider turtle. I love teaching and look forward to seeing your child in class soon!
