Main Idea
Determining the main idea of a text is understanding what the text is mostly about - the big picture.
 Week 2
Lesson 3
Making Inferences
Students will use what they read and their background knowledge to make inferences about a text.
Lesson 4
Making Predictions
Based on initial reading of a text and prior knowledge, learners will make a prediction of what is to come in the reading.

Lesson 5
Cause and Effect
Learner's will identify cause and effect relationships in a text.
Lesson 6
Context Clues
Students will use surrounding clues in the text to create a better understanding of the vocabulary in a text.
 Week 4
Lesson 7
Figurative Language
Figurative language is language that is not meant to be taken literally, but is layered with meaning. Types of figurative language include: similes, metaphors, idioms, and other literary devices.
Lesson 8
Story Structure
Students will better understand the structure of a text: exposition, rising action, falling action, and resolution.
 Week 5
Lesson 9
Compare and Contrast
Students will compare and contrast topics within a text to gain a deeper understanding.
Lesson 10
Text Features
We will look at various text features elementary students should be familiar with: Title, heading, caption, illustrations, glossary, index, and more.

Lesson 11
Drama
An overview of the elements of drama including cast, setting, dialogue, plot, stage directions, description, and theme.
Lesson 12
Fiction and Nonfiction
Students will look at the difference in fiction and nonfiction texts.
  • Students will be exposed to common core comprehension skills and test taking strategies to build confidence and sharpen their knowledge.
I have been a certified elementary educator for 8 years! I hold a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Elementary Education and am currently and fully certified. I have been a self-contained fifth grade teacher covering all subject areas, a departmentalized fifth grade teacher, and a self-contained third grade teacher covering all disciplines. I have also been a substitute teacher where I have experience teaching classes K-5.
