Assessment
A short verbal summary will be provided to the parent/adult at the end of class if requested.Class Experience
US Grade 1 - 5
In this individualized class your learner will use a book that has words they can read fairly easily since we are concentrating on improving comprehension skills. We will start with pre-reading activities to warm up. These can include connecting to prior knowledge, thinking about character traits, or considering why authors write different kinds of books. Then we will set a comprehension goal for the book (such as learning how a character changes or figuring out what the main idea of a nonfiction book is). Your child will read the book with my support. I will assist with both reading the words as well as comprehension during the reading. We will also work on aspects such as fluency (ensuring that reading is smooth and expressive) as needed. When reading is finished we will work with the book ensuring that your child has a deep level of comprehension. All children are different and bring a different set of needs and strengths to reading. As a teacher and tutor with many years experience one of my greatest strengths is developing an individualized approach for each child to ensure their success. It is not enough for children to be able to read. They must also want to! A wide variety of very engaging books (both fiction and nonfiction) are available to suit any learner's needs and interests. You will either need to provide me with your child's guided reading level (something many schools provide parents with) or I will do a 1-session reading assessment to understand their reading level and strengths/needs.
Learning Goals
Students will increase their comprehension - both literal (who is the main character) and inferential (why did the character do X)
Students will improve their fluency by reading smoother and with more expression
(This is an incidental goal - I will work on decoding skills as necessary) Students will improve their decoding abilities by learning new phonics rules and practicing in authentic texts
