US Grade 3 - 5
A more recent study of children in 3rd to 5th grade showed that students lost, on average, about 20 percent of their school-year gains in reading and 27 percent of their school-year gains in math during summer break. This course can help your learner continue to read and practice formally and informally taught comprehension skills to prevent the summer slide AND help cultivate a deeper love of reading! This is a 6 week course meeting biweekly that will follow the same general format each time. At the beginning of each class we will introduce ourselves and the topic of the day. Students will have an opportunity to share prior knowledge of the skill, then we will begin our lesson. Lessons will include one or more reading passages, discussion, and comprehension questions. Students will be informally assessed of their knowledge of the topic in a variety of ways. I have a deep love of reading. It is my favorite hobby and my favorite subject to teach. My goal for this course is to grow your learner's understanding of reading through teaching comprehension strategies and topics that they will carry into the rest of their school career and beyond through showcasing the beauty and adventure in reading.
Learning Goals
This course is a refresher that will cover comprehension skills taught throughout the skill year while keeping your child reading and practicing those strategies to prevent the "summer slide".
