US Grade 3
In this ongoing class, we will review vocabulary words related to the text and will read through the short article or excerpt from a story. We will practice nonfiction comprehension activities such as fact/opinion, main idea and details, summarizing, and locating details to support our thinking in the text. Students will be encouraged to read parts of the text, participate in shared reading of certain words or phrases, discuss the text, and if time permits write a sentence or two about the text with assistance as needed. My teaching style is laid back and students will be encouraged and praised when they participate. I have many years of experience teaching literacy in small groups, and 1:1, and in a classroom setting from grades 1-4 and I look forward to sharing my love of non-fiction with new students. Teacher expertise and credentials
Master's Degree in Education from Roberts Wesleyan College
I have a Master's in Elementary and Special Education, a B.A. in Psychology. I am certified to teach in New York State and am also a certified Mindfulness for Children Practitioner. I have been teaching since 2006 and love to break things down and help students discover what works best for them. I have taught grades 1-6 in traditional schools and have experience providing home school instruction. My areas of focus are reading, math strategies, sight words, word study and motivating reluctant writers. I want my students to learn something new, but also discover a little bit about how they learn as that will help them for years to come. I often use humor to keep my students engaged and entertained during my classes. I live with my husband and two naughty cats in Florida. One of my favorite things is to the go to the beach and find fabulous shells. I look forward to seeing your child in one of my classes soon.
