Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 5
Intermediate Level
In this reading comprehension skills book club, students will read high-quality books as they practice fluency, comprehension, vocabulary skills, and more! All chosen books will be at a fourth/fifth grade reading level.

This class will meet twice a week for two weeks. Students will be expected to read the selected books (reading agreed upon chapters prior to each meeting) independently outside of class. We will meet together after each section to discuss characters, setting, plot, sequence of events, make predictions, and complete activities aimed at building our reading skills.

Class Structure For Each Meeting Will Follow This Format

Before Meeting :
Students will watch a recorded teacher-created introduction video prior to reading that will go over the course structure, introduce the text, and pre-teach any suggested reading strategies/note taking tips for the week.

Students will come to class having read the selected chapters.

5-10 Minutes: Introduction and Informal Discussion
Students will be encouraged to share their thoughts and ideas about the characters and setting. Discussions will be guided by the teacher, but student led topics are also welcome as they relate to the book.

10 Minutes: Book Club Style Questions (formal discussion)

10 Minutes: Activity - This will vary depending on the class number and the book - examples include character flip charts, interactive reading strategy note cards, illustrations, vocabulary comics, and more!

10 Minutes: During our final ten minutes, we will be making predictions, having closing discussions, and previewing the content for our next meeting.

June Session 1 (June 3-14): Rules
June Session 2 (June 17-28): Out of My Mind
July Session 1 (July 1-12): Fish in a Tree
July Session 2 (July 13-26): Friendle

Books must be either purchased or borrowed from the library prior to class. We will not be reading full chapters together during our class time.

Massachusetts Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
Hello, and welcome to Outschool! My name is Ms. Kristin. I am a licensed elementary school teacher with my Masters Degree in Elementary Education for grades 1-6. I absolutely love teaching! I have taught grades 3, 4, and 5 in a brick-and-mortar school for over eight years and have been teaching online, too, for the past four years. As a classroom teacher, I have become very familiar with elementary subjects for grades 1-5 and their corresponding standards in math, English, reading, writing, science, social studies, and test prep. Familiarity with different grade levels allows me to differentiate my instruction and guide students to higher levels of thinking as they master grade-level concepts and seek to enhance their skills. My lessons are based on Common Core State Standards and the Next Generation Science Standards.

Qualifications & Licenses:

Educational Philosophy:
I believe that students succeed when they are engaged, valued, and when lessons are personalized in some way to each individual student. During each lesson, I use positive reinforcement and gentle guidance to ensure students feel safe sharing their ideas. I strive to foster an inclusive and relaxed classroom environment and encourage students to participate, learn from each other, and have fun with the materials.

I am excited to get the opportunity to teach your child, and hope to see them in the classroom soon!

-Ms. Kristin
