Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 5
Why is inferencing an important skills? Developing strong inferencing skills is an important foundational skill that paves the way to higher order thinking, abstracting connections, and literary analysis in later years. Without strong inferencing skills, readers often struggle to cultivate understanding in sciences and social studies while looking at differing sources.

During this one time class, students will have receive direct instruction on how to make inferences. When making inferences it is important for reader to be connecting the reading to their own ideas in order to make reasonable and informed inferences to the text. Students will be exposed to about 15 minutes of different teaching regarding strategies and process to making inference. Then students will look at different sources (images, short video, news headline, and a short reading) and determine reasonable inferences about the information. Students will work collaborative within google slides and through verbal discussion to work through the different sources.

This course will fit the needs of students who are brand new to inferencing to students with moderate skills in inferencing (these students will be challenged in increasing their thinking, elaborating on, and citing evidence when appropriate). This course will not benefit students who already have developed inferencing skills.
