After teaching in classrooms for the last sixteen years, I have found many useful strategies to help students to monitor their understanding of the text they read. The organizers that I use for this class are made by me to assure they are kid-friendly but provide rigorous opportunities to keep track of the text that the students are reading. 4 lessons//4 Weeks
Week 1Lesson 1Main IdeaWe will read nonfiction text and practice finding the main idea based on the details provided, followed by a practice page and answer sheet.Week 2Lesson 2Story Plot ElementsWe will read fiction text and practice locating details about story elements (character details, setting, problem, turning point, solution, lesson), , followed by a practice page and answer sheet.Week 3Lesson 3Cause and EffectWe will read nonfiction text and practice finding examples of cause and effect with the facts from the text, , followed by a practice page and answer sheet.Week 4Lesson 4InferencesWe will read fiction text and practice finding clues from the text to make inferences about characters, events, and problem in the passage, , followed by a practice page and answer sheet.
Students will learn a reading strategy to help support better reading comprehension. (main idea, story plot, cause/effect, inferences) Students will learn the usefulness of graphic organizers to help them monitor their own reading comprehension. Students will practice this reading strategy as independent practice on the practice page provided (and answer sheet)
-Certified in Elementary Education-all core subjects for 1st through 6th grade. -I have over 17 years of experience with teaching small guided reading groups, reading interventions, and literacy groups.
Homework Offered
Students are expected to complete the graphic organizer WITH the class recording. Then, students are expected to select their own book of choice which is the same genre from the lesson (fiction or nonfiction) Students are encouraged to send a picture of their independent assignment to their teacher via Outschool platform.0 - 1 hours per week outside of class
