Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 3
In this ongoing reading comprehension course, students will engage in weekly small group reading fluency and comprehension practice for fiction and nonfiction texts. Students will use evidence-based reading comprehension strategies that allow them to comprehend texts in a deeper way. We will connect the ideas in the text to students' background knowledge throughout class through discussion and note-taking.

Reading passages are at a 3-4th grade reading level.

Structure:
⭐Introduce the genre and topic of the article and discuss background knowledge/make predictions about the text
⭐Discuss and model the week's reading strategy
⭐Group reading of the text using the reading strategy and uncovering the meaning of unknown vocabulary words (marking up the text)
⭐Comprehension questions are discussed and answered

We will read one text each week. Students will learn a reading strategy and will practice using that strategy with the text of the week. Some strategies that we will learn are:
⭐finding text features
⭐skimming/scanning
⭐identifying unknown vocabulary words
⭐questioning
⭐annotating
⭐making connections
⭐drawing inferences
⭐and many more!

While reading, students will practice the comprehension strategy, practice vocabulary and grammar skills, and discuss the text with their classmates. At the end of each reading, they will work together to answer questions about the text.

Each week, they will be provided with worksheets and graphic organizers to help them with the week's passage.
Learning Goals
Students will be able to read and understand fiction and non-ficiton grade level texts (texts are leveled at grades 3-4) by using reading comprehension strategies. Students will be able to use context clues, background knowledge, and dictionary skills as they uncover meaning, vocabulary, and make inferences when reading a text.

Massachusetts Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
Hello, and welcome to Outschool! My name is Ms. Kristin. I am a licensed elementary school teacher with my Masters Degree in Elementary Education for grades 1-6. I absolutely love teaching! I have taught grades 3, 4, and 5 in a brick-and-mortar school for over eight years and have been teaching online, too, for the past four years. As a classroom teacher, I have become very familiar with elementary subjects for grades 1-5 and their corresponding standards in math, English, reading, writing, science, social studies, and test prep. Familiarity with different grade levels allows me to differentiate my instruction and guide students to higher levels of thinking as they master grade-level concepts and seek to enhance their skills. My lessons are based on Common Core State Standards and the Next Generation Science Standards.

Educational Philosophy:
I believe that students succeed when they are engaged, valued, and when lessons are personalized in some way to each individual student. During each lesson, I use positive reinforcement and gentle guidance to ensure students feel safe sharing their ideas. I strive to foster an inclusive and relaxed classroom environment and encourage students to participate, learn from each other, and have fun with the materials.

I am excited to get the opportunity to teach your child, and hope to see them in the classroom soon!
