Class Experience
US Grade 4 - 6
The ultimate goal of reading instruction is comprehension. In this 8 week FLEX course, students will learn how to use eight research-based strategies to improve their reading comprehension, plus practice applying them to their own reading. These strategies will serve as an anchor students can reflect on when reading any text. In a supportive and collaborative environment led by a certified, UVA-trained reading specialist, each weekly session will include a link to a Nearpod presentation showing: -a video read aloud that models the comprehension strategy being taught -practice of the strategy using teacher provided texts -opportunities to practice the strategy we are working on with a fiction book they are currently reading Each week, questions will be posed in our classroom for students to respond to. Students will be asked to post photos of their work to the classroom each week for teacher feedback. Each week will be devoted to a different key reading comprehension strategy: Week 1: Activating Background Knowledge/Making Connections Week 2: Predicting Week 3: Visualizing Week 4: Asking Questions Week 5: Making Inferences Week 6: Determining Importance/Finding the Main Idea Week 7: Summarizing Week 8: Metacognition/Comprehension Monitoring Students can practice these comprehension strategies at any reading level, but please note that the texts used in class will be around a 4th-5th grade reading level. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Virginia Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
Welcome!
I am passionate about instilling a love of reading in children through sharing engaging, high interest texts. The classes I teach are literacy based, and I also offer reading assessments to help parents have a better understanding of their child's reading level and strategies to support them.
I have ten years teaching experience at the elementary level and my Masters in Reading Education from UVA and am certified to teach readers from K-12. I ran the CETA (Changing Education through the Arts) program by the Kennedy Center, at my school and find great value in arts integration.
I believe children should feel that they are valued members of a class in order to do their best learning. Classes should be engaging, interactive and social, especially in a virtual format.
I have two little guys at home and we love to bake, go on nature walks, and we just learned about Geocaching! Oh, and I'm a Penn Stater at heart- We Are!
