This course takes the form of a classroom reading block. Typically during the reading block learners work in a group setting with their teacher to:

1. learn new vocabulary,
2. discuss the reading purpose before reading
3. receive explicit instruction on a specific comprehension strategy
4. read a text
5. answer text-related questions

In this course, learners will receive this same structure on a weekly basis to:

1. encourage critical thinking reading skills
2. use a graphic organizer
3. answer comprehension check questions

Learners will receive instruction through teacher created presentations, videos and discussions and will receive support through graphic organizers, written examples and teacher modeling.

Academic vocabulary is heavily emphasized in this course and students will be required to demonstrate their understanding of the terminology. This could include such items as reading to (sequence events), reading to analyze (text features), reading to (compare and contrast), and so on.

I grew up and went to school in the New York City area but now live in a small farming community in rural Midwest, USA. I enjoy working with and meeting people from both urban and rural settings and readily adjust to meet their learning needs in a culturally responsive way. I also volunteer at a prison and remain adaptable to ensure a supportive and safe learning environment.

I have degrees in the area of Corporate Communication, Education, and Second Language Acquisition. My teaching background is varied as a former 3rd Grade Classroom Teacher at a French immersion school, Orton-Gillingham trained structured reading teacher and as an Adjunct College Instructor.

I believe instructional data is crucial to improve learning outcomes. I constantly assess student comprehension during sessions in a relaxed and encouraging learning environment.

I love traveling and learning more about different cultures. This helps me to support all learners in my classroom. So far, I have visited Estonia, Russia, Kinshasa (Congo), London, Togo, South Korea, Latvia and a few other places. I also studied abroad in France. With each travel experience my respect for people and their culture simply deepens. I look forward to meeting you too!
