This class gives learners the continuous practice of reading comprehension. Each week, we'll also use crossword puzzles to review vocabulary from the reading. The class will be kept small to ensure that each learner has the opportunity to participate. Feedback from the teacher will be sent to the parent's inbox after each class. What will be taught? - Reading comprehension (informational texts, non-fiction) - Vocabulary development - Practice answering M/C questions, T/F questions, short answer questions How is your class structured? - Each learner will have the chance to read the provided text aloud (Powerpoint slides will be screen-shared). - We will find the answers together in the text before finalizing the answer. - Educational games (including external websites such as www.quizizz.com) will be used to enhance the learning experience. What types of readings? - Each class, we'll look at a different informational text about Halloween. Week 1: Reading Comprehension: History of Halloween Week 2: Reading Comprehension: Animals used for Halloween Week 3: Reading comprehension: Cultural Practice of Trick or Treating Week 4: Reading comprehension: Delicious Pumpkins Feel free to dress up for this final class. We will do some crossword puzzles using words from the previous classes (remember to review) and have our reading game on www.quizizz.com (remember to review). What's your teaching style? - Learners have the opportunity to interact with peers and the teacher. The class is learner-centered. How much interaction? - Learners will be able to participate throughout the class and use the chat function.
Learning Goals
- Learners will develop and improve on reading comprehension skills. Although many learners read for fun, it is important to read with a purpose. This ensures learners can understand the reading material and are prepared for future reading exams in school.
- Learners will learn to skim read, scan read, recall details, answer true or false questions, or answer multiple-choice questions.
