In this course, students will learn how to identify the main idea of a story, summarize a text, and make predictions about what will happen next. They will also practice using context clues to understand unfamiliar words and phrases. By the end of the course, students will have a deeper understanding of the stories they read and the skills necessary to comprehend more complex texts. Each week will focus on a different comprehension skill or strategy. During the first class of the week...
Topics will vary week to week. Overall learning goals include: -I can use the title, cover, and pictures to make predictions about what the story might be about. -I can use what I already know and what I read to make inferences about the characters, setting, and events in the story. -I can ask and answer questions about the story to help me understand what is happening and why. -I can determine what is important in the story and identify details that support the main ideas. -I can create mental images in my mind to help me understand and remember what I read. -I can summarize the main ideas and details of a story in my own words. -I can determine the author's purpose for writing the story (to inform, persuade, or entertain). -I can determine the theme of a story. -I can identify the sequence of events in a story. -I can compare and contrast characters, settings, and events in two or more stories. -I can identify the point of view and how it affects my understanding of the story. -I can identify different genres of literature (fiction, nonfiction, poetry, etc.) and explain their characteristics. -I can analyze the characters in a story and identify their traits and motivations. -I can use text features (headings, captions, diagrams, etc.) to help me understand the information in a nonfiction text. -I can use illustrations to help me understand and remember what I read. -I can describe the plot (the main events) of a story.
