Description
Class Experience
Class: Reading Comprehension. I am focused on students remembering what they read. I had troubles with this as a grade school student. As a substitute teacher I see students struggling with to comprehend and recall what they just read. Students will take turns reading a story aloud. I will guide them in reviewing the story. We will be reading one short story per class. (Stories are numbered with the class: such as #1, #2, #3, etc) I will stop at various parts in the story where I...
Students will learn to pay attention to what they are reading: the setting, plot, characters, and events. Students will learn to pick out important aspects of the story, to recall, and talk about the story in chronological order. Students will identify what is happening in the story and, why certain things are happing in the story--how the different events are related. I will encourage students to be avid readers.
I have a Master's Degree, semi-retired, and now I work with students from kindergarten through high school as a substitute teacher, afterschool tutoring, writing plays and skits, and teaching on-stage acting classes. The plays have presented to the public in theaters and schools. My philosophy; “No one can take away your education.” I encourage students to have fun learning and to take ownership in their education. I have a great rapport with students. I enjoy telling stories, flying kites, cooking on a campfire, building parade floats, tutoring after school, attending students' sports events with their parents. I hear from kids and parents,“Where do you get your energy?” Teacher James
No specific homework. Students will be encouraged to read on their own. Students may share the title of books that they have read. Students are encouraged to take my Writing Short Story class as these are the stories I use in the Reading Comprehension Class.
I will give a letter grade if the parent requests it.
50 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
