Class Experience

This class is taught in English.
Students will learn how to openly discuss and express their ideas about a novel. They will learn the terms of literary devices: simile, metaphor, personification, and foreshadowing. They will learn new vocabulary in context and practice these words in order to remember them for the future. They will learn the love of reading by delving deeper into meaning and charaters.
I am a certified English and journalism teacher and have taught this novel previously to others in this age group. I am also a Library Director, in charge of leading and preparing for many book clubs for all ages.
Learners will be assigned 3-4 chapters each week to read on their own before the next class meeting. See chapter sequence above under Class Course Description. No other work will be required.
Students will need to borrow from their library or purchase the book Wolf Hollow by Lauren Wolk.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
50 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
This novel contains themes of war, bullying, and discrimination of a veteran who may or may not struggle with undiagnosed mental illness and homelessness. This character carries guns with him, but we find out that they are not in working order. In one chapter of the book, a girl is maimed because of a rock thrown by a bullying character. Also, the class will utilize the online game Blooket at This will done in a closed class, and there is no account needed. I will post a link to the game in the chat in class, and students can just click on the link which will take them directly to the specific game we are using. If the link in chat does not work for them for some reason, they can also put in the game ID at which is unique and private to the game and this class and does not require an account. I will monitor play by playing along with the students, and the game will only be available to this class.
