Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 2
Beginner - Intermediate Level
A group class with personalized support as your reader learners vital phonics and reading skills from an encouraging, supportive, patient reading teacher. My background in speech pathology, special education, reading instruction and homeschooling my own son has given me the personal and professional skills and experience to help meet students right where they are today.

There is never a one-size-fits-all approach that works for every single student. I recognize students' strengths and work with them to support their goals.

**This 1st grade reading course builds in a systematic sequence, therefore, attending each and every class or watching the replay is important.

This reading class begins with learning ending spelling patterns:
/tch/ = patch, watch, match
/dge/ = dodge, ridge, lodge
Long Vowel-Consonant-Vowel (e.i., -ild = wild; -old = sold; -ind = mind)

And more.

If you are not able to attend the live class, the video replays will be available in the classroom.

**This course can be taught 1:1, also. Message me if you would prefer 1:1 intensive instruction based on your learner's needs.

This class will focus on reading skills with an explicit and systematic phonics program that consists of a carefully designed plan to support a solid foundation for functional and effective reading skills. This program is both research-based and evidence-based.

This will be a whole group instruction class and is considered to be around the spring semester of 1st grade reading level. If you have a learner that is in the 1st, 2nd or 3rd grade and you feel they could benefit from learning the basic foundations of reading skills at the 1st grade level, this could be the class for them. (Message me with any and all questions that you might have.) The “grade level” will NEVER be mentioned and/or discussed with the learners in the classroom setting. This information is provided for families to review the class skills to determine if it is a good fit for what you are looking for.

How do you know if this is the level for your learner?
-Can your learner easily read 3-letter words like “cat” “dog” “cub” “run” in sentences? YES.
-Can your learner read most long vowels words that end in silent "e" words, "rate," "kite," etc? YES.
-Can your reader read words the begin and end with the digraphs, "sh," "ch," "th,"? YES.
-Is your child ready for more advanced reading of words with the spelling patterns, "tch," (watch), "dge," (dodge), etc.? YES.

This class will begin with “getting ready” lessons. These lessons are crucial for learners to attend and complete before moving forward into the first letter and sound patterns that will be taught in this class.

This class schedule will depend on the learners in the group. I want to move at a pace that will assure all learners will learn and benefit from the instruction and practice that will be provided.

When a learner completes this course, the 2nd grade part 1 class may be the next step for your learner to continue learning to read at the next reading level.

If this level is too advanced for your learner, I have kindergarten and 1st grade reading level reading classes for the very beginner student.

Message me if you want to know more about that course.

The following plan is fluid, however, we will learn in the sequence as provided. This program will teach new skills while bringing back previously-taught skills so students can learn and practice at the same time.

Each class will provide new sounds, reading passages, phonemic awareness, drill work, word work, irregular words and more.

The class will follow a systematic and consistent format due to the research indicating the success of this approach. The skills learned in this program build on each other so readers are learning and practicing previously learned skills all of the time.

After the structured plan time, the group will have the option of participating in a fun game or reward activity.

OPTIONAL EXTRAS:
The teacher will provide extra videos and downloadable activities and reading passages so they will feel supported by the teacher even outside of classtime. This will make practice EASY for learners AND families. (I am a mom, so I appreciate this, too! Ha!)

Class Materials:
Students should bring a whiteboard and marker or paper and pencil.
Letter tiles or the printed letters that I will be providing after enrollment. If your learner will be using their own letter tiles, please make sure the letters are all one color versus multi-colored letters.

**All additional materials and information will be provided by the teacher.

Please message me with any and all questions. I know it can be confusing when you are looking for a reading class in the sea of options.

I will support your learner and add extras as YOUR learner needs. This is a group class with a personalized feel when support is needed.
