Join me in this ROCKIN' READER book club for the avid OR reluctant reader to improve & grow a love of reading as we read 5 books from different genres and discuss our thoughts as well as theme, plot, characters, setting & more!

What's included

11 live meetings
5 hrs 30 mins in-class hours
Homework
1-2 hours per week. Learners will have 2 weeks to read each book, and a book companion guide will be provided for learners to complete while reading. A recommended reading pacing guide will be provided which includes having learners read 5-15 pages per day, depending on the book.

This book club is broken down into easily readable amounts of pages so that your learner can enjoy reading rather than feel like it is a chore! With a focus on discussion, this book club will allow your learner to ask questions, share insights, and learn more about story elements such as plot, theme, author’s craft, & more! Who knows… your child just might find their new FAVORITE book! Join me as we dip our toes into different genres such as historical fiction, mystery, biography, & more! 🎉

⭐️ There is flexibility in how these are read. Learners can read the physical book, listen to audiobooks, or be read to by someone else. Choose what’s best for you! ⭐️

BOOK CLUB OUTLINE

In this book club we will…
⭐️Read a total of 5 books from different genres
⭐️Take 2 weeks to read each book to avoid rushing our reading
⭐️Meet once a week to discuss our reading
⭐️Learn about the author and any fun facts about the book
⭐️Discuss story elements, make inferences, and predict what’s to come
⭐️Ask questions, share about favorite parts, and engage in fun polls or trivia
⭐️Improve communication skills as we share with classmates


📚Each book will have 2 meetings devoted to it. During the first meeting, we will learn about the author, talk about any book fun facts, make predictions about what’s to come, and discuss the first half of the book. During the second meeting, we will discuss the book in its entirety, review comprehension questions, and evaluate our prior predictions. 📚

BOOK LINEUP

Over these 11 weeks, we will read…
✅ Class 1 - Get to Know You: We will get to know one another & learn about all the books we plan to read! Students will vote on the biography book we will read during this class, and we will discuss how our book club will work.
✅ Classes 2 & 3- Nonfiction: From an Idea to LEGO by Lowey Bundy Sichol
✅ Classes 4 & 5- Fiction: Odder by Katherine Applegate
✅ Classes 6 & 7- Mystery: Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library by Chris Grabenstein
✅ Classes 8 & 9- Historical Fiction: Ranger in Time: Night of Soldiers and Spies by Kate Messner
✅ Classes 10 & 11- Biography: Who Was (specific book from the series will be voted on by learners)

Please Note- Learners will be expected to read the books prior to our class meetings. We will not be reading the books during class time. You will need to gain access to the books by purchasing or borrowing from the local library. You are welcome to use audiobooks or digital versions, as well. Please choose whatever is best for your learner and family schedule.

BONUS
Learners will be provided a reading schedule and optional reading study guide for each book that students can complete while they read. These packets will include vocabulary, comprehension checks, and more!

Parental Guidance
YouTube videos will be utilized for students to learn about the author and as we discuss different reading skills. Kahoot will be utilized for fun facts and trivia activities during class. No login is required. Google Slides will be used during class to present information.

Mrs. Blake graduated from Texas A&M University with a Bachelor's degree in early childhood education. Following graduation, Mrs. Blake earned her Master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction. While earning her degrees, Mrs. Blake was a substitute teacher for a variety of grades and a personal nanny for a family. After completion of both degrees, Mrs. Blake became a Texas certified teacher and ESL teacher. 

She has taught for over 6 years in the classroom in 3rd and 4th grade as well as tutoring for 10+ years grades PreK through 6th. Mrs. Blake has served on curriculum writing teams, leadership committees, and engages often in professional development to improve teaching abilities and learn best practices. Currently, Mrs. Blake is an in person homeschool cohort teacher for grades 1-4, teaches virtually, and is a private tutor. With ample time spent in the classroom and working with students, Mrs. Blake has a wealth of knowledge for teaching students and helping them grow.
