The course is a five-hour reading comprehension course taught over five consecutive days for students reading at the sixth-grade level. Each session is one hour long and will cover one Great Minds biography, comprehension questions, vocabulary activity, and a writing response activity. Students will improve their reading comprehension by practicing skills of identifying main ideas and details, making inferences, using compare and contrast skills, using summarizing skills, and writing responses to assignments designed to reflect their understanding of specific concepts presented in each biography.
As a reading specialist, I am offering this class to provide students with assistance to improve reading comprehension skills.
Homework Offered
The writing response activity is an assignment the students complete outside of the classroom as homework. When students complete the writing response activity, they will post it in the classroom to receive teacher feedback.1 - 2 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Learner progress assessment occurs through student responses to comprehension questions, vocabulary matching activities, and student completion of the writing response assignments.Grades Offered
The teacher will post the articles used in each session for students to print for class use. The titles of the biographies used include: 1) Albert Einstein, 2) J.K. Rowling, 3) Helen Keller, 4) Martin Luther King, Jr., and 5) Vincent van Gogh.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
