Description
Class Experience
Reading and writing are the basis for all academic success, and sometimes it takes a special education teacher to help! Each lesson will be based upon individual learner need and be divided into three sections: reading, spelling and writing. I use a variety of engaging activities in my classes including: slides, songs and body movement. During the reading portion of each class, learners will work to develop missing phonics skills and to improve sight word fluency. Next, the spelling...
Each lesson will be individually constructed to fit learner need. All learners will continue to develop missing skills in reading, writing and spelling during each lesson. Phonics and sight words will be emphasized first using slides, songs and body movement, age dependent, of course! Spelling will be the middle portion of each lesson and will focus on learning to spell any word using patterns, not rote memorization. Writing will be individually instructed at the child's level with the final objective being crafting a three-paragraph essay which not only includes the standard expectations of organization, spelling, grammar, capitalization and syntax; but which also is masterfully crafted using a variety of sentence forms, good transitions and excellent readability. These three skills take time to develop, but with my individualized lessons, students will make weekly progress toward their goals.
I am a K-12 certified special education teacher. I understand the effort that students put toward learning goals, and I applaud all incremental growth. I am accustomed to developing engaging, individualized lessons that fill gaps in student learning for a successful outcome. I also hold a TEFL certificate which qualifies me to teach students whose primary language is not English.
Homework will be assigned on an as-needed basis and will depend upon need, age, focus skill and ability.
All students should attend class with a piece of paper and a pencil. The teacher will supply all necessary material which may be an emailed worksheet to be printed at home. Students may need to print individualized worksheets or word cards.
Assessments will be through teacher observation as well as by student input. Parents will receive a progress report after each lesson.
25 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
