US Grade Kindergarten
(This class is for students who know how to write the alphabet. If the student is still learning how to form their letters, please look for a different teacher with a wonderful "writing the alphabet" class!) In this class students will be shown a short list of sight words. As a class, we will read and practice the sight words together. Then we will choose a sight word off of the list and create a sentence with the sight word. The teacher will write the sentence down and the students will copy the sentence down onto their paper. Students will read the sentence back to the teacher. We will repeat this activity several times. By the time class is over, the learner will have several sentences written on their paper that they can read back to their family. This class does not spend time "sounding out words." If the teacher deems it appropriate, some phonics time may be spent in this class, but overall this is a sight word recognition class. The class description says 5-6 year olds, but seven year olds are welcome to participate. Four year olds are welcome - but they must be able to copy letters down on their own without help. Let me know if you have any questions. Prerequisite to this class: Students must be able to recognize and write letters down on paper without help.
