Reading and Writing Across Genres: Spring Trimester (3rd/4th Grade)
In this spring trimester course, students will read a book of choice from each of four assigned reading genres and use lessons from their reading to write narrative, persuasive, and informational prose, and poetry, too.

This is the third in a three-trimester series. The format is the same as the fall and winter courses, however new topics are introduced in each unit and different genre pairings are used. Students will improve their understanding of the format and purpose of various genres of writing Students will write narrative, informational, and persuasive texts of fiction and nonfiction Students will follow the writing process of planning, drafting, revising, and editing their work Students will practice applying observations from one genre to their own work in another genre
Homework is minimal, but is required to successfully complete this course. Homework will consist primarily of reading in the beginning of each unit, using a worksheet packet to guide the student's analysis of the text and prepare for discussion in class. As we begin writing, students will need to take additional time between classes to complete written drafts and revisions. Some steps of the writing process may also be supported by completing pages in the class packet. Students are encouraged to share their writing at the end of the unit regardless of where the are in the writing process.
A reading list will be shared at least one month before the course begins. Learners will need to have one book for each three-week unit by the start of the unit. Learners should be able to find book options at no cost through their local libraries, or they may choose to purchase books. Digital books are also acceptable as long as students can view them while they are in class (different device or browser window). A unit packet will be shared at the start of each unit containing guiding questions to aid reading and writing. We won't always share all of the answers to the packet questions during class; Rather, the packet serves to prepare students to participate in broader class discussions, and to plan and then check their writing. Most students find printing the packet to be very helpful, although it's also possible to view the packet online and record responses in a notebook. Writing assignments may be completed by hand or digitally. Students will have the options to read their work aloud, use the Screen Share feature to show others their work, or to share their work with me in the Teacher tab (either privately or so that I can Screen Share it with the class).
1 hour 30 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 2 - 4 hours per week outside of class.
