Reading and Spelling BIG Words! Jolly Phonics Digraphs

Year 1 (part 2) of a 5-year course. This is a loop class.

Every week we will go through the phase 3 set of jolly phonics listed below. We will read stories, sing songs and complete activities.  Resources will need to be printed weekly in order for your child to benefit from the class.

Phonics sound - ai. I can sing the rainbow song! Read and match the words on the trains. Read and write 'ai' words. Tricky words.

Phonics sound - oa. Jolly Phonics fun. Join in with your roleplay stick puppets for the much loved tale of 'The Three Billy Goats Gruff.' The story will be told in the form of a powerpoint with the fantastic song sang by Frank Luther   (recorded in 1948). The words of the story will be left on the powerpoint for you to re-tell to your child, if you wish. I will send the recording that I will play. Story sequencing cut and stick activity with the word 'goat'.

Phonics sound - ie. Jolly phonics fun. Sing a song of sixpence nursery rhyme and sequencing. What is your favourite pie? Finish with a word and picture match of 'ie' sounds.

Phonics sound - ee or. This sound although as one in jolly phonics, will be split over two weeks. This week we will do the 'ee' part. Flight of the bumblebees - Everything bees. Bed and bee-hive cut out with 'bee' words to trace. Springtime Blossom tree painting with music of 'Spring ' by Antonio Vivaldi. Tricky words coming out of bee-hive.

Phonics sound- ee or. This week we are doing the 'or' sound. After doing the second part of the worksheet 'or' sound, we will look at an example of a very famous donkey: Donkey from Shrek. Sing along to 'I'm a believer' with Donkey and have some colouring fun. For the second part of the lesson we will look at some Aliens and play a game where the children match the Alien name and picture with the name I say.

Phonics sound -  z & zz. Bumblebee buzzy zig zags (whilst watching an animation of flight of the bumblebee) How the Zebra got his stripes. Story and 2d zebra crafting fun.  Jolly Phonics song and worksheet.

Phonics sound - w. We will sing the jolly phonics songs and do the actions. Worksheets will be completed alongside wiggly worm writing. Children will start to write small sentences using sight words.

Phonics sound- ng. This week we are doing the song and rhyme 'Old King Cole'. The children will match the sentences to the picture and underline the phoneme 'ng' in the short story 'the king and the ring'. Following on from this we will do a set of guided comprehension questions where all the answers are words that contain the 'ng' sound. Together we will write the words on the line provided.

Phonics sound - V. The Zoo Vet story. Colouring of the Vet. Sing a vet song to the tune of 'Old Macdonald'. Play a game where we begin to sound out cvc words with the sound 'v'.

Phonics sound - OO. This week we are looking at 'oo' as in 'cook'. The children will join in with a  story of 'Charlie cook's favourite book', by Julia Donaldson. Bring your favourite book for show and tell. Complete the rhyming words and match with the pictures. Finish with a song about the two long and short 'oo' vowel sounds.

Phonics sound - OO. This week we are doing the long 'oo' sound and will be reading the story 'Room on the Broom' by Julia Donaldson. The children will do a simple tracing activity of 'Room on the Broom'. They will then begin to sound out words with the long 'oo' sound and write them under the picture.

Phonics Sound - Y. Sing along to the yellow submarine by The Beatles. Yellow Submarine colouring and tracing the words. Sing the Jolly Phonics song and complete the worksheet. 
Phonics sound - X.  We will read the story 'Funnybones' by Janet and Allan Ahlberg. Children will then stick the bones together to form an X-ray. The jolly Phonics Worksheet will be sent so you can complete this at home.
