Beginner Level
Class Overview: In this ongoing reading class, learners will work on reading passages that enhance their reading fluency, vocabulary, writing responses, and comprehension skills. This class is not phonics-based. Each reading level includes a mix of 5 fiction and 5 non-fiction passages, with learners required to read each passage three times before answering comprehension questions. The questions range from 2 to 6 per passage and include a combination of multiple-choice and free-response questions that encourage text-based evidence and critical thinking. This class is ideal for learners in Grades 1 to 5 who can read and decode simple text. Learners should bring a notebook and a writing instrument (pen or pencil) to each class. Some sections uses Google Slides. Class Structure: - 20 mins: Reading the passage - 20 mins: Completing comprehension questions What to Expect: At the start of each class, learners will silently read the passage to themselves before reading it aloud to me. Any mispronounced words will be highlighted and noted in the learner’s notebook. After reading, we will work together to answer the comprehension questions, with an emphasis on writing responses in complete sentences. Homework will involve reviewing mispronounced words, finishing any incomplete questions, and re-reading the passage. Important Notes: - This is NOT a phonics-based class. - The pace of the class will be guided by the learners. - Please select the appropriate section for your learner based on their grade: Grades 1: Level D-H Grades 2: Level I-N Grades 3: Level O-P Grades 4: Level R-S Grades 5+: Level T-Z - You may schedule a "Meet and Greet" with me to determine your learner’s reading level. - Learners can join the class at any time. This class is available as a 1-on-1 private lesson or in a small group of 3 or 4 learners. If the class is full, you can join the waiting list to be notified when a spot opens. - For 1-on-1 sessions, please click here to book or request a spot. https://outschool.com/classes/tutoring-sessions-with-mrs-mareeka-jyqbwfhp - If this class is too challenging for your learner, consider enrolling in my Sight Words, - Phonics, and Decodable Reading class. https://outschool.com/classes/sight-words-phonics-and-decodable-reading-for-k-gr-2-9S5BJgET?sectionUid=2cfcbdd5-58f1-4b9d-aa50-ab2b7acf96db&showDetails=true Class Schedule: >Tuesdays at 5 PM EST - Grades 4 - 5 ( Google Slides) 📘 Who Was Nelson Mandela?
