This class is designed to improve our reading skills and comprehension skills. We will learn how to write simple sentences. Throughout this course, we will read a chapter book or a series of chapter books, depending on the length of each book. We will then discuss each book, what we like, what we dislike, etc. Our first day will be an introduction to the chapter book. Each night we will have a set number of pages to read.* At the beginning of each class, we will have a 5 to 10-minute discussion about the pages we read the night before and review the story. Then we will continue to take turns reading the story. Anyone can ask questions. Questions are encouraged. In the last 5 minutes, we will wrap up and be given the next pages to read. When we have completed the book, we will learn simple sentence structures. Each student will need to write a short paper. This paper can be a couple of sentences, to a paragraph or more long, telling me if they liked or disliked the book and why. These papers will be shared with the class. We will discuss our papers in class and why we liked or dislikes the book. We will talk about our favorite parts and the parts we did not like about the book. Books are subject to change in each session. Teacher expertise and credentials
Reading is an essential part of everyday life. Understanding what you read is even more important than actually being able to read. I wanted to give children an opportunity to read and express their opinions of the book in a safe environment. An opportunity to check their understanding of the story where there is no pressure to be right every time. Each person may understand the story in a different way. My class will allow the student to be who they are and express their understanding.
