Class Experience

In this five-week course that will meet twice a week, students will continue to apply early literacy skills learned in Reading 101 for Littles Ones: A Beginner's Course Reading, but with new and engaging content. This content will include new sight words, books, as well as further work to decode words and deepen comprehension of text. This course will allow students to hone their reading skills even more! By the end of this course, your child's collection of books they can read independently will continue to grow.

While the content will change weekly and build upon the prior week, our classroom activities will continue to be similar each week to allow students a sense of predictability, routine, and comfort.

Through learning a new sight word each week, this course will focus on a number of skills including...
Reading strategies (i.e. pointing underneath each word)
Concepts of print (i.e. letters make words and words make sentences, print has meaning, words are separated by spaces, etc.)
Reading simple stories
Answering comprehension questions
Creating simple sentences using a specific teaching technique
Adding photos and/or drawings to represent sentences

Teacher expertise and credentials
As a certified reading specialist and classroom teacher with over eleven years of teaching experience, I have experienced first hand how important it is to provide children with a strong foundation for reading. When I first began my teaching career, I had the opportunity to help create a reading curriculum for children in their first formal year of schooling in West Africa. Between my experience working overseas and teaching in the U.S., students have had great success with reading in my classroom by learning the concepts taught in this course.
