Class Experience

In this ongoing class, students will read popular short stories together during class-time and then determine the 5 W's:

- Who is the story about?
- What is the story about?
- Where is the story?
- When is the story?
- Why did things happen in this story?

Each time we meet, I will apply creative and new approaches to discovering the 5 W's that will be fun and engaging! Students will take turns reading our selected story aloud to practice public speaking skills. Students can fill in handouts that I will provide prior to each class. We will work on these handouts during class. Students will discover that finding the answer to the 5 W's goes beyond merely listing names, dates, and places. By studying each of these aspects as we read, we can create a rich outline that then shows us the framework of the story. This, in turn, helps students as they write their own stories (which is a new class I will be offering soon in response to this class). Understanding the depth of character development, setting, and the plot is crucial to becoming a good reader and writer.

We will use the same handout for each class. Since we will read a new story each week, students can take these classes when they are able without falling behind.

We will take turns reading the stories in this class, which will help with reading comprehension and different learning styles.

My students will also practice social skills in this online class as they listen, follow directions, raise hands, wait for their turn to speak, are respectful to the teacher and other students, and ask permission before leaving class if it is during class time.

Please note that while we will be reading short stories, if there are only 1 or 2 students in the class, sometimes we will not have time to read the entire story. We will, however, focus on the 5 W's that are revealed to us more and more (and also chance) throughout our reading.

Week 1: "The Missing Mail" by R.K. Narayan

Week 2: "All Summer in a Day" by Ray Bradbury

Week 3: "Zlateh the Goat by" Isaac Bashevis Singer

Week 4: "Queen Raggy" by Templeton Moss

I can't wait to meet your learner! If you have any questions, feel free to message me. I hope to see you soon!

Hello!

My name is Katie Fleming and I’m so excited to meet and help your child with their educational goals!

I'm a 5th grade teacher at a private school. I teach math, science, English, history, geography, reading, and spelling. I specialize in ELA.

In the classroom, students who lag behind and students who are advanced have a disadvantage because there is only one teacher and limited time. As a product of homeschool education (1st-12th) myself, who then excelled in college and beyond, I know that small classrooms and individual student-focused teaching is necessary to truly help every student excel. Everyone is at a different place and needs to be met in that place! After tutoring English online for the past 3 years nearly full-time and then teaching 5th grade in a brick-and-mortar school, I have the skills and experience needed to help your student meet their full potential.

A little bit about me! I'm a mom of 4 boys (ages 4, 12, 9, and 7). My house is crazy, but I love it! In my spare moments, I enjoy camping, hiking, and kayaking. I have been a writer and graphic designer since I was a little girl. As soon as I could write, I began creating all sorts of stories and poems. When we bought our first home computer (yes, I am that old), I quickly learned how to use programs like Microsoft Publisher and eventually the Adobe Design Suite and created my own newsletter as a kid. Writing and designing marketing material is in my blood! I earned my Bachelor of Science degree in English with a focus in Writing from Towson University in Baltimore, MD. I have completed numerous credits in Secondary Education and began a Master of Arts in Teaching degree as well. Life took me in a different direction for a few years and I worked at Johns Hopkins Medical System and University, providing marketing material for the programs. This led me to complete a Certificate in Graphic Design at Montgomery College in Rockville, MD. I began my own Graphic Design business, incorporating my gifts in graphic design as well as writing to create marketing material for my clients. After I began having children, I found myself becoming more involved in the education world. I homeschooled my son for one year and not long after I began as an online ESL teacher with VIPKID, earning my TESOL Certificate with this company. In terms of teaching experience, I have taught in both a traditional and nontraditional setting off and on throughout the past twenty years (currently I am a full-time fifth-grade teacher at a private school).

Students will find my tutoring/homework help sessions to be fun, interactive, and we will tackle any problems they are having at school and figure out how to move forward together!

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at any time! Also, if there are any particular topics within my area of expertise that you would like for me to offer that I haven’t already, please let me know. I hope to see your learner in my classroom soon!
