Let's have fun reading theater scripts while improving reading fluency and comprehension. Learners integrate thinking, reading, listening, speaking performed in a fun classroom environment as they read different theater scripts. This ongoing class meets once a week to practice reading to improve their fluency which includes accuracy, pace and expression. This is more than just reading words and reading them quickly. It's all about fluency. Learners work on accuracy, not word calling but learning to pronounce words correctly and learn new vocabulary in the meantime. Fluency helps develop literacy. The more fluent a learner is in reading, the easier learning becomes. Learners work on pacing, the speed at which one reads and expression, taking on the emotion and feelings of the character in the script. Format of each class: 🎭 Introduction and background to the script 🎭 Learners give predictions about the characters and the play 🎭 Teacher models appropriate intonation, volume, and pitch of one or two characters and the learners follow along in the script [eventually learners will model for the class] 🎭 Vocabulary discussion 🎭 Part selection and assignments 🎭 Individual practice 🎭 Reader's Theater Performance . . . Let the show begin! Combining reading practice and performing, that's what Reader's Theater for the Young is all about. Who doesn't love a good script. As a young learner myself, I participated in many plays. As a Teacher, I used Reader's Theater as a way to get my students involved in reading [a script], performing for their classmates, eventually the entire school and their parents. That's how much my students love Reader's Theater and I love teaching it. It made reading less laborious and a much more enjoyable experience.
As a life long educator, I have helped learners of several different continents learn to read, improve comprehension and literacy from ages 4 to adults. I love the theater and have used it as a teaching mechanism for many years.
At one time I owned a performing arts company for children 6-18, performed in A.R.T [Alpine Repertory Theatre] where I as a Principal, the teachers and staff put on plays during the school year for the entire student body, their prarents and the community.
I'm excited about working with learners here on Outschool, helping them to improve their reading literacy and comprehension, and expose them to a different way of reading while having fun.
