Class Experience

Students will read each fairy tale with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support their comprehension while learning to speak clearly at an understandable pace.  Specifically, we will target fluency skills through accuracy, rate, phrasing and expression. To increase comprehension, students will compare and contrast two versions of a fairy tale. 

As outlined below, the activities in this class are aligned to the Common Core State Standards for grades 3-6

Reading: Literature: Range of Reading and Level of Text Complexity:
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.3.10, CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.4.10, CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.5.10
By the end of the year, read and comprehend literature, including stories, dramas, and poetry, at the high end of the text complexity band independently and proficiently.

Reading: Foundational Skills: Fluency:
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.3.4, CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.4.4, CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.5.4
Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.

Speaking & Listening: Presentation of Knowledge and Ideas:
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.3.4, CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.4.4, CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.5.6, CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.6.6
Report on a topic or text, tell a story, or recount an experience with appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details, speaking clearly at an understandable pace.
There are no religious references in any of the Christmas themed scripts.
An optional creative writing assignment is given each day. 
PDF Scripts of each tale written by JP Jagger (Used with express written permission from the author) will be provided upon enrollment. If your reader could benefit from fluency practice, it is a good idea to print the scripts and practice them before class. However, I will also be screen sharing the scripts, so printing is not required. Handouts: We will be using a Venn Diagram to compare the traditional fairy tale to the fractured tale as part of class, so I have included those handouts as well, which can be helpful for following along. Again, printing is optional. Create Your Own Fractured Tale handout: After class, students will be encouraged to try writing their own fractured tale using the given handout as a guide.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
3 hours 45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
