US Grade 3 - 4
In this ongoing, small-group class, students will have fun improving their reading fluency! Reading fluency is much more than just reading quickly. Reading fluency is about developing accuracy (correct word pronunciation), rate (appropriate speed of reading), and prosody (expression in reading). Added benefits of developing strong fluency are the gains students will make in their reading comprehension and vocabulary. Reader's theater scripts are a wonderful way to engage readers in developing all three areas of fluency! Students will enjoy reading with peers and learning new vocabulary to improve their fluency! Each class will follow this 4-part schedule: 1. Warm-up--We will warm up our voices by practicing a short poem or tongue twister together 2. Vocabulary Work -- Using games and activities we will learn new vocabulary words from the story/script 3. Rate and Accuracy -- We will practice reading the new vocabulary words from the script together and time our speed 4. Reader's Theater reading -- We read the script together sharing characters and parts! Some learners prefer to read off of a printed script and some learners prefer to read off slides. At the beginning of each week, I will post the script in the classroom to be available for printing. Learners can print the script and practice ahead of time or use it to read in class. However, I will also have the script available to read together on slides for those who do not wish to print. ** If you are unsure if your learner and their reading level would be better suited for Reader's Theater 1 (Grades 1-3) or Reader's Theater 2 (Grades 3-4) please send me a message and I will happily send you some sample scripts from each class to help you decide which would be the best fit for your learner** Class Schedule: Week of April 7th -- Neighborhood Clean-up Day by Create-Abilities Week of April 14th --The Golden Egg Contest —Author unknown Week of April 20th --The Day the Crayons Came Home based on the book by Drew Daywalt Week of April 26th -- Hansel and Pretzel by Melanie Whitesides Week of May 5th -- Mystery of the Runaway Mutt by Carol Montgomery Week of May 12th -- Fox Fools Eagle (Native American Myth) Week of May 19th -- Mock Trial of Cinderella’s Stepmother Week of May 26th -- Who Freed the Fish? by Rachel Lynette Week of June 2nd -- The Three Billy Goats Tough by Melanie Whitesides Week of June 9th -- Alien Visit to Summer Camp Week of June 23rd -- Tomato Tornado by Melanie Whitesides Week of June 30th -- My Candy Bar Melted! Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree in Education from Queen's University
I have a BA in Education from Queen's University (Kingston, Ontario, Canada) and a reading endorsement from Drake University (Des Moines, Iowa, USA). I have worked as a reading interventionist with the Des Moines Public School District. My role as a reading interventionist was to strengthen learners' proficiency in reading by offering small group instruction covering a specific area of the five pillars of literacy (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and text comprehension). I love helping students find confidence and enjoyment in reading by creating fun, yet targeted, reading lessons that will give learner's a solid foundation of literacy skills.
