Beginner Level
This is a weekly-themed book club meant to encourage learners to try new things and expand their knowledge and interests. Each student will choose a book, graphic novel, poem, publication, or current event that they prefer and that fits the theme of the week. They can choose the same every week or switch it up for a more well-rounded experience. Students can read at their own pace at home; however, it is recommended to finish the piece of literature or come very close before the class takes place. Each week will have a new theme, so if your student needs an extended period of time to read through their book, then I recommend starting the week previous. There will be no reading of the book in class time. Each week, the students will spend between 3-5 minutes (depending on how many students are in the class) sharing a small passage or sentence they liked from what they read with them to the class. They will also answer a couple of questions about what they read. For example: How does the book fit the theme? Did you like it and why? Did the poem make you feel any strong emotions? Would you recommend this read to someone else? Do you relate to any of the characters? Why did you choose this book? Etc. If there is extra time after class, they will get the opportunity to ask other students questions. If you need any recommendations for book options, please let me know, and I will supply a few ideas for inspiration. BE AWARE: Parents, we highly encourage you to be involved in helping to pick out books and stories that follow the weekly theme to encourage reading at an appropriate age level and if it's appropriate for a class setting. Please refrain from sharing books about sensitive or controversial topics. (For Example: Politics, Religion, Illness or Death, Sexuality, etc.) Please use discretion, as this class could have younger children present. Keep in mind, the class could end five minutes early or late depending on how many students are enrolled. Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been involved in early childhood education for over ten years including teaching, tutoring, and homeschooling my own children. I am also working on my Duel Bachelor's Degree of General and Special Education.
I believe that learning is about a student building confidence and being creative while learning new skills. I have found that one of the best ways to teach young children is through interest-led subjects and a lot of interactive learning.
Reading is my favorite hobby! I love reading novels of all different genres, medical studies (I have a child with a traumatic brain injury, so the medical world intrigues me), current events and cultural explorations, as well as funny and unique facts about random subjects. My family jokes that I like to know a little bit about a lot of things. I think reading about a well-rounded number of subjects in many different forms of publication gives me extra opportunities for conversation starters, personal enrichment, and keeps me constantly curious.
