Learners will practice reading, writing, vocabulary, spelling, grammar, listening, speaking, and pronunciation. Students will know how to write a 5-paragraph essay by the end of this week. They are welcome to join in the class for as many weeks as they wish to practice these skills as every week that this course is run will involve a different topic for their essay. Learners can build a portfolio of essays demonstrating their skills which is essential for any homeschoolers to use in their reports.
I am a native English speaker with a 150-hour TESOL qualification from Arizona State University and post-graduate qualifications in Applied Linguistics from Monash University. I am also a lawyer in Australia and I homeschool my own children, therefore speaking and teaching clearly have been a part of my life for many years, and now I am also applying these skills to teaching others. Other applicable courses that I have completed that pertain to this class include: - Reason and Persuasion: Thinking Through Three Dialogues By Plato; - Technology and Ethics; - ADHD: Everyday Strategies for Elementary Students; - The Clinical Psychology of Children and Young People; - Everyday Parenting: The ABCs of Child Rearing; - A Brief History of Humankind.
Learners will need to finish the paragraph that they were working on in class that day in their own time if they did not finish it during class time. They can either upload a screenshot or a document to the classroom, or show their work in person at the start of the next class. Each class recording will be made available so that learners who need to can review the lesson from each day before moving onto the next day.
Learners will need paper and pens or pencils for the handwriting portion of the class, and they will need a computer or device with a word processing program on it.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Learners will submit their essay to the teacher in a private message at the end of the week via the classroom, and the teacher will provide feedback and suggest where the learner needs to work on to improve upon certain skills if applicable. Students who are homeschooled will be able to use their written and typed drafts as assessment examples that they can submit with their reports in their own jurisdictions along with the class description essentially as the lesson plan to go with the assessment.
2 hours 30 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
Websites listed under "Sources" are for the teacher to access for curriculum and material. The learners do NOT need to access anything on the internet outside of Outschool for this class. When applicable, I may screen share slides from Google Slides, and on rare occasions, I may screen share an educational song from YouTube as I find them useful in helping students to memorise the rules of grammar.
