US Grade 1 - 4
Beginner Level
This class is for struggling students that need extra practice in reading, speaking, and comprehension. This course is a low pressure, fun environment and is meant to help students build confidence reading out loud and exploring their interests. Many readings will vary based on student interests and reading levels. The class will alternate between fiction (short stories) and non-fiction (articles & speeches). This is a great class to help your student get out of their comfort zone and practice social skills while improving their literacy skills. Course content will change based on student needs, reading level, and/or grade level. Students will practice reading individually and in a group. Each student will be given a chance to read and/or respond to the text. Mr. Conway's classroom will become a comfortable place for students to practice pronunciation, ask questions, and break out of their comfort zone. Prior to each reading, Mr. Conway will review vocabulary and assess students' previous knowledge of the lesson's focus. Topics may include theme, tone, mood, and author's purpose. Occasional speaking and writing activities will asses students' comprehension and give them another chance to share their thoughts. Ideally, students will leave this course with a boost in confidence and a fresh perspective on reading. During the first session, students will fill out an interest survey. This will allow Mr. Conway to better select texts that align with the students' interests. Please contact me with any questions or requests!
