Class Experience

US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - 2
Do you love to read? Are you learning how to read? Is reading hard for you? Are you having trouble comprehending what you are reading? Do you really want to talk about a story that you've been reading? If you answered yes to any of these questions than this is the class for you! In this class, it's your turn to read your favorite book (or chapter from a book) to the teacher, me :)! If you don't have a book, it's totally okay, I will provide one for you.

Practicing reading out loud to others is beneficial for all children, even advanced readers. Reading to others helps young readers master many skills such as how to properly pronounce words, how to use language to make sense of the world, how to pause at certain points and how to read with inflection. Reading out loud can also improve information processing skills, vocabulary, comprehension, self-confidence and much more!

The structure of this class is as follows:

2-3 minutes- Discuss the book, or chapter, that will be read- make predictions, why was this book chosen, is the story fiction/non-fiction, etc.

15-20 minutes- Read the story, or chapter- discuss what is happening in the story, re-visit predictions and build comprehension. During this time, I will also work with struggling readers on any reading skills needed (Example: sounding out words, practicing sight words, practicing letter sounds, etc.).

2-3 minutes- Share/review what was learned about the story, new words that were learned, skills practiced, any other closing thoughts about the story (or reading), and goodbye cheers :).
Learning Goals
The goal for this class is to help students improve their reading, self-confidence, comprehension and re-telling of stories. This class is also designed to help learners organize their thoughts when making predictions or remembering parts of a story. Most importantly, the goal of this class is to help children find, (or keep), the joy of reading.
