Class Experience

This one time class for students ages 6-8 will allow students to read to loving and nonjudgemental animals that love to listen. Classes will be held with 1-2 learners to allow for at least 15 minutes of reading time for each learner with their animal of choice. If two students sign up in a section they will be asked to listen to the other student read (great opportunity to practice listening skills and make a friend). Each student will have their own individual animal choice between a tortoise, rabbit, bearded dragon, red and blue parrot, or green and orange parrot. The students may choose their own story book or I will provide one. Learners are welcome to sign up for one class or as many as they choose. Every time they sign up they can read a different story and meet all the animals. Remember practice makes perfect! I will always be available to motivate, support, and encourage students as they read.

Learning Goals

Students will practice reading, improve self confidence, and meet loving pets.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I am an educator. I have a BA degree in psychology and education from Barnard College Columbia University and an MA degree in education from Teachers College Columbia University. I have taught grades Kindergarten through 8th grade for 30 years in a public school setting. I love to teach. Some of my interests include literature, animals, and nature. My philosophy as a teacher is to make a connection with my students in order to facilitate their learning. I am eager to integrate my passion for literature and animals to provide students knowledge in these areas as well as social emotional learning. I have a few pets including dogs, a rabbit, parrots, a tortoise, a bearded dragon, and fish. I have developed lessons incorporating my pets to offer both ELA and SEL instruction. I also enjoy teaching about pet facts and ownership of the various animals I am lucky to have in my life.
