In this class, students will read the book Nate Donovan Revolutionary War Spy. Students will get a good overview of the Revolutionary War and the Quaker religion through this book study. We will also cover many literary elements and work on reading comprehension and active reading. Week 1: - Introduce the Revolutionary War: Briefly discuss the events leading up to the Revolutionary War and the start of the war. - Discuss different genres of literature and which genre the book falls under -...
- Learn basic information about the Revolutionary War. - Know the basic beliefs of the Quakers. - Learn about setting, point of view, conflict, story structure, and other elements of literature. - Improve reading comprehension skills. - Write a complete book summary.
Students will be responsible for reaching the assigned chapters each week. Weekly reading will be about 20-30 pages. Students will also have a reading comprehension worksheet and sometimes an extra worksheet if we don't finish in class.
Students will need access to a copy of Nate Donovan Revolutionary Spy by Peter Marshall and David Manuel. The audiobook version is available on Hoopla (library card required) at no cost. It can also be found online at Amazon: https://tinyurl.com/ybalmnx9
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Students will receive constructive criticism on worksheets and summaries as an informal assessment. If requested, I can generate the informal assessment into a letter grade.
45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 2 - 4 hours per week outside of class.
We will be discussing the war, but it is not graphic in the book. We will also discuss the Quaker religion, but strictly as an observation and as a way to understand the characters' decisions in the story.
