Read Smart: Elementary Book Club (Under 10)

Each month, we'll read and discuss a different modern elementary or lower middle grade novel! This book club blends pleasure and academic reading-- we'll discuss what we love (or hate!) about the book, as well as theme, symbolism, characters, and structure. We read a wide genre of books in this class to get students out of their reading comfort zones, and each class is centered on student-led discussion.

Description

Class Experience

I am a professional children's author with 15 published books available in multiple languages worldwide, including the ELLIE, ENGINEER series, the PIP BARTLETT series, the SISTERS RED series, and the DOUBLECROSS series.
Please be aware of how quickly your student will be able to realistically read the chosen story.
 5 files available upon enrollment
Students should acquire their own copy of the chosen book. Please note that they should have acquired and read 1/3 of the book BEFORE our first class.
45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 2 - 4 hours per week outside of class.
While each book is widely considered appropriate for children under ten, please research the titles chosen to be certain it is a good choice for your learner.

Below are my general classroom rules and policies. These will also be explained to students when we begin class!
-For everyone's safety, and to ensure an engaging and social experience, students are required to have working microphones and video for the entirety of this class, positioned such that we can both hear and see them.
-Students are asked not to use filters or virtual backgrounds-- though if there is an important reason to use a virtual background, please just let me know ahead of time that your student will be using one (no questions asked!).
-Students will be asked to introduce themselves by sharing their name, pronoun, and a favorite book.
-The Zoom text chat is set to "host only", meaning students can chat with me, but not to one another or the entire classroom.
