Homework
1 hour per week. Students should read daily, either independently or with a partner, for 10-20 minutes, depending on age. If parents would like their children to have extra practice, skill-focused materials will be provided, though this homework is not mandatory.Assessment
The first 1-2 sessions will be devoted to giving the student a literacy assessment to find areas of need. Progress monitoring and informal assessments will be given regularly to check on the student's progress on a skill. Every 6 weeks a more formal assessment will be given to re-evaluate the student's needs. If a more formal battery of assessments is wanted by the parents, this can be done by a separate fee.Grading

Teaching Style: I am Mrs. Courtney an educator with over 22 years in the field. I have a BS in Early Childhood & Elementary Education, a MS in Deaf Education, and an M.Ed. in Education with a Reading Specialist Endorsement. I have worked in a variety of educational settings, including online. I am passionate about reading, writing, vocabulary, and English grammar. My teaching style is nurturing and encouraging, with a focus on positive reinforcement and building confidence. I adapt to the learner's pace and needs, making the learning experience enjoyable and motivating. Since this class is a 1:1 personalized reading instruction, topics will be based on the needs of each individual student. Some Topics That May Be Covered: 1. Phonics and Word Recognition: Learning to decode words and understand the sounds of letters. 2. Comprehension Skills: Understanding the meaning of texts and making connections. 3. Vocabulary Building: Expanding word knowledge and enhancing language skills. 4. Fluency Development: Improving reading speed and accuracy. 5. Critical Thinking: Encouraging analytical and creative thinking through reading. 6. Literary Exploration: Exploring various genres and styles of literature. 7. Writing Skills: Enhancing writing abilities and creative expression. Class Structure: The class is structured around one-on-one online sessions. Each session lasts 30 minutes, with a frequency tailored to the learner's needs, typically once or twice a week. You can easily sign up for multiple days a week, by registering for multiple sessions. Lessons are adapted to the learner's level and progress, with a focus on their specific reading challenges and goals. The first and/or second session will focus on a complete literacy assessment, so I can pinpoint your child's strengths and areas of need. Teaching Method: My teaching approach is highly interactive and engaging. I focus on Science of Reading strategies with a structured literacy approach. I will use TpT, Faith in Literacy, Kahoot, Reading Milestones, Reading A-Z, Epic Books, and Core Knowledge materials and resources, among others. Each session combines a variety of teaching methods, including: 1. Customized Reading Materials: Tailored reading materials and exercises. 2. Storytelling: Use of engaging stories and narratives. 3. Interactive Games: Fun and educational games to reinforce learning. 4. Visual Aids: Utilization of images, charts, and videos to enhance understanding. 5. Discussion: Encouraging learners to share thoughts and questions. 6. Assessments: Regular assessments to track progress. Learner Interaction: Learners will have ample opportunities to interact with me throughout the class. Interaction methods may include: 1. Discussion: Engaging in conversations about the reading material. 2. Interactive Games: Playing games to reinforce concepts. 3. Q&A Sessions: Addressing questions and concerns. 4. Show and Tell: Encouraging learners to share their thoughts and stories. 5. Reading Together: Reading and exploring texts together. Required Experience/Knowledge: No prior experience or knowledge is required. This class is open to learners of all reading levels, from beginners to those looking to enhance their existing literacy skills. I will assess the learner's current level and tailor the instruction accordingly.
