This is an ongoing class where deaf and hard-of-hearing children will receive personalized literacy intervention services, from an experienced reading specialist, to help improve their language comprehension and word recognition skills!

US Grade Kindergarten - 5
Beginner Level
This class is taught in American Sign Language.
Some goals, but not limited to:

Demonstrate understanding of the organization and basic features of print.

Recognize the distinguishing features of a sentence (e.g., first word, capitalization, ending punctuation).

Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds (phonemes).
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.1.3
Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.

Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.

Ask and answer questions about key details in a text read aloud or information presented orally or through other media.

I am an educator with over 22 years in the field. I have a BS in Early Childhood & Elementary Education, a MS in Deaf Education, and an M.Ed. in Education with a Reading Specialist Endorsement. I have worked in a variety of educational settings, including online. I have worked as a classroom teacher and a reading teacher/specialist in a variety of educational settings, including Deaf Institutions.
Homework Offered
Students should read daily, either independently or with a partner, for 10-20 minutes, depending on age. If parents would like their children to have extra practice, skill-focused materials will be provided, though this homework is not mandatory.

Parents may be given materials that need to be cut out or prepared ahead of time. This involves the use of scissors, which is a potential hazard.
