The student will use illustrations and details in a story to describe its characters, setting, or events. The student will compare and contrast the adventures and experiences of characters in stories. The student will recognize the distinguishing features of a sentence (e.g., first word, capitalization, ending punctuation). The student will know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words. The student will read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.
I have 6 years of experience as a classroom special education teacher, 20 years of experience as a tutor, and five years of experience as a homeschool mom. I will be incorporating many aspects of a successful reading program into these lessons but most importantly the students will be reading real books (no printables or decodables). I find that children get much more satisfaction when reading real books. Feeling successful and enjoying their lessons will benefit them for the rest of their lives!
Students should practice their reading about 10-15 minutes a day in between sessions. They can also practice telling different people about the stories they're reading (grandparents, friends, etc). Additional ideas can be given if needed.
Students need their own copies of the Mo Willems Elephant & Piggie books. They can be purchased individually, in volumes 1 & 2 or the complete collection. Students should always have something to write with and draw with. They may want to keep a folder or bin of materials & books ready for class. Blank index cards and sticky notes can be used to make flashcards for new words & write down hard words or questions.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Informal assessment feedback can be given based on weekly sessions. If you need more formal assessment please book a 1:1 "pre-tutoring assessment" (50% off with enrollment in a semester course), no tutoring needs to be booked after.
30 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
Mo Willems Elephant & Piggie Books will be used for reading. The teacher will be providing the curriculum.
