1 hour per week. Follow-up activities are provided as optional homework. Please note that the optional homework is additional to the lesson notes that are needed to complete the interactive lessons.Certificate of Completion
I can create a certificate of completion upon request.Grading
I will assess the submitted follow-up work from the learners and give feedback on how well they have understood that week's reading comprehension skill. The homework will need to be submitted in order to receive feedback.Class Experience
Once students have learned HOW to read, they need to learn more about WHAT they read! In this engaging 8-week self-paced class, learners will dive deep into understanding how to comprehend unfamiliar fiction and nonfiction passages. As an experienced teacher, I understand how important reading comprehension is for success in all academic areas. I am passionate about supporting young learners in becoming critical, creative, and confident readers! What to expect: ✅ Each week, a pre-recorded video is sent out with a carefully scaffolded lesson to support the topic of the week. I use my own Canva presentations to make the lessons visually engaging. These lessons will begin at the sentence level to reduce cognitive load and then gradually progress to paragraphs and whole texts. ✅ Notes will be provided with an activity that learners can interactively complete as they watch the lesson. There are visual reminders to pause the pre-recorded videos to answer questions using their notes. ✅ Follow-up activities are provided as optional homework. Students also have the option to book 1:1 tutoring with me to work on a specific skill and topic interests (see 'Next Class' for the tutoring option. This would be additional to the cost of this self-paced class). ✅ Weekly feedback will be given to learners who submit their work (learners can choose whether they would like me to provide this in written or video format). Throughout these lessons, learners will be encouraged to use other essential strategies such as visualising and identifying the author's purpose to deepen their understanding of a text. Practising these strategies will help your learners improve their comprehension of unfamiliar texts and boost their confidence in reading. I also have a range of reading tutoring options available, for both native English speakers and ESL/EFL learners. Please feel free to send me a message if you have any questions about this class or tutoring options. See you in the classroom! Miss T 👩🏻🏫

over 8 WeeksLesson 1:
The Power of Prediction & Prior Knowledge
Predictions are guesses we can make using clues in the text, illustrations, or photos. We can make predictions using our prior knowledge, which are things we have already heard, read, or seen. When we make these connections with the text, we are more interested in learning from what the author is writing.

Lesson 2:
Keywords & Reorganisation
Reorganising is when we find key points and words in a text and put them together to understand more about what the text is saying. We use it to join ideas and words together to understand more about what we are reading.

Lesson 3:
Reading Between The Lines: Inferencing
Inferencing is a skill we use when reading. It is when we use clues in the text and our prior knowledge to get a deeper meaning from what the author has written. The answer is not always clear, so we must be detectives and read between the lines! When we read, we look for clues to help us create a picture in our mind, and add the clues to our prior knowledge. There can sometimes be more than one right answer.

Lesson 4:
Read Around A Word: Understanding New Vocabulary
Vocabulary skills are when we determine the meaning of words we do not know so we can make sense of what we read or hear. A skilled reader can skip over the unknown word and read the rest of the sentence to work out the unknown word. They also begin to learn new words through listening and talking (prior knowledge).
