Now that the students are reading well, we will finish the last two chapters of the Ratus blue textbook, and we will extend our work in French with vocabulary, spelling, and grammar practice.

Class experience

This class is taught in French.
Students will move into genuinely independent reading. By now we have covered 95% of the common phonetic patterns in French and we have built up a known vocabulary of several hundred words. Students can enjoy age/grade appropriate books from any source.
Students will express themselves better in French, will speak in complete sentences, and will write meaningful sentences. They will recognize and use present, past, and future. We will continue work on masculine and feminine, singular and plural, in context.
Students will extend their vocabulary. We will study vocabulary directly from pictures, learn vocabulary in context in stories we read, and develop vocabulary that students ask about.
Students will write their own simple sentences and paragraphs. They will use French phonics to spell at least 90% correctly; they will recognize and remember silent letters in common words and conjugations.
I speak French fluently and have lived in Montreal and area for a long time. I've taught and tutored a large number of students to read in French, using high-quality well-known materials that are aligned with the science of reading.
I have a BSc, a BA in Honours Math and a double major in Languages and Linguistics, and an MA in Education. I taught in French first-language schools for four years, and have taught a number of classes in French as a second language. I also have extensive experience in teaching and tutoring reading in both English and French, and all of my reading students have succeeded in learning to read fluently.
Homework Offered
Children are actively encouraged to read and re-read the Ratus stories we have done in class (Please do not work ahead as we have specific ideas to present in class.) Students can and should read other materials such as library books and trade books. The "Ratus Poche" yellow level books are designed for this level of reading and can be great fun; the red level are challenging but possible. Students can enjoy Sesame Street and other children's TV in French -- I will provide some links in class. Outside practice should be fun. Students may recite verb conjugations as a memory aid; just a few minutes twice a day as a personal challenge. I will provide some links in class.
0 - 1 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
This is an interactive class and students are assessed continuously as we go. A certificate of achievement can be provided on request.
Grades Offered
Please see the text list given above.

Students should have a gel pen or fine marker (Please, not pencils -- hard to write smoothly and fluently, and hard to see on camera)
They also should have coloured pencils or markers to do colouring exercises as we go.
They need a plain notebook to write in -- primary interlined notebooks are really good to help with letter formation, but any clean fresh notebook will do.
They need a good open area on a desk or table where they can write with free arm motion, and good lighting.

I am going to test out a webcam mirror which allows real-time viewing of written material placed on the keyboard. If it works well I will recommend it and pass on the link -- an excellent way to share in online classes.

As this is a highly interactive class, students need a webcam and a microphone and in general will keep them open all class.
Some students find earphones helpful to cut out noises around them. A headphone set with attached personal microphone may help cut out feedback, which can be a problem, and cut noise from other people in the environment which is sometines a problem.

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
We discuss wide ranging topics. As students become more able to express themselves, they will say many different things. Openness and tolerance are encouraged. Negative comments about other people are not permitted period and any student who behaves in this way will be removed to a different room. If sensitive topics come up, at this age I will always refer back to parents.
We may read a few extracts from kids' Wikipedia or other resources in French. Again, all efforts will be made to keep things age and grade appropriate.
Parents are asked to remind students not to give out details such as exact birthdays or addresses. We do sometimes talk about home cities/states and climates and time zones, which are interesting and necessary, but nothing that can identify a specific location or person.
(1) Ratus text. "Ratus et ses amis" orignal version (NOT methode traditionelle which unfortunately is missing some important practice.) Most students will still have this text from Grade 1. New students are encouraged to get the text and review the first six units; the stories are fun and the phonics is useful.
(2) Ratus et ses amis, white workbook. Again returning students will have this. I will provide links for new students.
(3) Ratus et ses amis, green workbook #2. Again returning students will have this. I will provide links for new students.
(4) Les superheros de l'orthographe. This is available free online. I will provide links.
(5) Les defis 100% francais. I am checking into availability and will add links later.
(6) Other selections which I will provide as needed.
