Read for Fun! Book Discussion Club: Make Friends and Talk About Books

In this ongoing book club, we discuss what we're reading for fun. Bring any book in any language and tell us what you love about it—or not! We also learn key concepts like author, genre, style, setting, and how to make a recommendation.

What's included

1 live meeting
35 mins in-class hours per week
Homework
1 hour per week. The homework is to read twenty minutes every day — any book in any language. During my early literacy training at the public library, I learned an incredible fact: If you read for just 20 minutes a day, you will read 1.8 million words in one year! Therefore, Teacher Christina wants everyone to read for twenty minutes a day. Not only will this daily reading habit expose the learner to 1.8 million words in a year, it will instill in them a lifelong love of reading. With reading being the cornerstone of all subsequent learning, the daily reading habit is the simplest, least expensive way to set your child up for a lifetime of success and joy.

Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 3
What have you been reading for fun? In this book discussion club — that promotes literacy and instills a lifelong love of reading — young readers will learn how to talk about their favorite books and make helpful recommendations.

Note: You do not have to finish a book to bring it to book club ... you can bring whatever you're reading, whether you've just started it, are in the middle of it, or even a book you just want to know more about. And if you don't have the book there with you, I can always pull it up book virtually during class!

In a relaxed and social setting, learners will find out what their peers are reading and become familiar with concepts like fiction, nonfiction, author, illustrator, plot, character, setting, and genre. Learners will practice the social skills of active listening, asking questions, and taking turns. They will choose which books to read and talk about each week, so topics are learner directed. I will come prepared to discuss an early reader or beginning chapter book I've been reading, to include fiction, nonfiction, biography, graphic novels, and audio books.

Daily Schedule:
✔️ HELLO SONG
✔️ ICE BREAKER
✔️ BOOK PRESENTATIONS
✔️ DISCUSSION
✔️ GAME
✔️ GOODBYE SONG
Note: If the discussion is going strong, I will allow class to go over time.

Some of my favorite books for this age group include:
→ Fly Guy series by Tedd Arnold,
→ Super Narwhal and Jelly Jolt series by Ben Clanton,
→ Ling & Ting series by Grace Lin,
→ King & Kayla series by Dori Hillestad Butler,
→ Magic Tree House series by Mary Pope Osborne,
→ Dog Man by Dave Pilkey,
→ Beak & Ally series by Norm Feuti,
→ Ballet Cat series by Bob Shea,
→ The Wild Robot series by Peter Brown,
→ Song for a Whale by Lynne Kelly,
→ and many others.

I can't wait to see your learners' favorite books and where the discussion leads!

You'll notice I cap all of my classes at 5 learners — this way I can see all of the learners' screens at all times and they can all see each other for maximum group engagement. I also keep the class focused on my face, voice, and physical visual aids such as actual books. Studies show kids in their formative years learn best through face-to-face interaction, so I don't use slides or virtual graphics that render my screen small and make the other learners' screens disappear. Learning in my class is centered on human-to-human connection, which creates a deeper, more permanent learning experience. Come see for yourself!
