US Grade 2 - 6
This course is best for kids who can read on 2nd grade level or above who might still be struggling with reading fluency. Fluency is the ability to read quickly, accurately, and with proper expression. Reading with fluency will help students with comprehension - understanding what they read. If your child is reading below the word per minute (WPM) numbers below, this class can help your child with increasing reading speed. *This class is not ideal for students who are still sounding out many words. If your child needs phonics support, we have a 1:1 class that can help: https://outschool.com/classes/private-reading-phonics-based-tutoring-for-emerging-and-struggling-readers-EOVRy1nF#usPzYxocLM According to a widely used screener called DIBELS, these measures can detect risk for falling behind in reading. By the end of 2nd grade students should read 94+ WPM By the end of 3rd grade students should read 114+ WPM By the end of 4th grade students should read 125+ WPM By the end of 5th grade students should read 137+ WPM WPM → Words per minute During the first class we will complete a Fluency Placement Test. We will be using a research-based reading intervention program. Our weekly routine will be 1. Choose a story 2. Take 1st read timing 3. Complete assisted reading activities 4. Complete pass activities with final timed reading Please review the description for Ongoing classes: https://support.outschool.com/en/articles/2272596-understanding-ongoing-classes • Reschedule/Cancellations We must value each other's time. Angelica and a small team of tutors provide one-on-one and small group instruction for emerging and struggling readers.
We have a robust online reading curriculum and have been serving families for over 5 years!
Viva Phonics uses a structured literacy approach to help struggling readers achieve reading success. Each phonics lesson is strategically designed to help your struggling reader master new skills and gain confidence in their reading ability.
Readers start by increasing their understanding of letter-sound relationships. This is key to helping students recognize familiar words and decode new words. The ability to decode helps readers grasp new vocabulary and apply new terms correctly.
Readers gradually build reading fluency through repetition, practice and drills. This new ability to read words quickly, accurately and with expression will improve a student's comprehension skills, increasing his appetite for reading and devouring all things words.
Then, readers develop a rock-solid foundation in spelling through dictation exercises – an integral part of reading – by practicing the speech sounds verbally, and spelling those speech sounds accurately. A strong speller is a strong reader and writer!
