Class Experience

We will read a few Elephant and Piggie books by Mo Willems: Should I Share My Ice Cream?, Waiting is Not Easy!, and My Friend is Sad. As we read, we will discuss the life lessons being taught: sharing, waiting, and what to do when your friend is sad. If they want to, students will be encouraged to read along with me, working on fluency, using different voices for different characters and showing emotions in their reading. Then we will make sack puppets of Piggie and Gerald. Students should be able to use scissors.
Learning Goals
Students will learn about the art of reading aloud with voice changes, expression and fluency. They will also learn about sharing, waiting, and what to do when your friend is sad. Finally, they will learn how to make a puppet out of a simple brown paper bag.

Hello, my name is Jan Bergesen, but the kids at school call me Ms. B. I've been an elementary school teacher for 35 years. Through the years, I have successfully developed a variety of unique ways of teaching things many children find difficult. Whether it's multiplication facts, math word problems, how to draw a person, how to write a paragraph or essay, learning to do ventriloquism, or even how to juggle, there's nothing I like more than watching learning happen. Did you notice the juggling in that list? I was a national award winning professional clown for 15 years and can share from those experiences as well. With that kind of a background, you know I like to have a fun, lively, creative class! I'm looking forward to helping your child experience the joy of learning.
