Description
Class Experience
Learners will practice reading comprehension skills and strategies including asking and answering questions about a text, identifying the main idea, exploring figurative language and description, as well as discussion skills. Students will demonstrate a basic understanding of the settings, characters and events in each story, and will be able to make a basic claim about why the illustrator made a choice. At the end of each read aloud discussion, learners will be able to articulate their ideas for an art project, and will be demonstrate an ability to represent an idea/concept using an art medium of their choice.
I am a K-8 certified teacher with a Masters in Teaching and 6+ years teaching reading to learners ages 6-9 in classroom settings.
If we run out of time for the art projects in class, learners may continue working on them afterwards, and can share pictures of their projects with each other in the virtual class space.
The only materials necessary for students to bring to this class are blank paper, and pens, pencils or paints! They may also get creative and use any other art materials they have access to in order to create their art piece. I will provide an example of my own art as a model, but the possibilities are endless!
45 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
The books we will focus on deal with emotions including anger and fear. The authors of each book present their ideas in child friendly and appropriate ways which allow learners to access the ideas safely. As a certified and trained K-8 educator, I work to create safe environments where students feel comfortable learning and talking about these concepts in a general way - I will never ask a learner to share if they don't want to.
