Class experience
Looking for a book club that has a bit more, or an art class that goes beyond making pretty pictures? Search no further, you have found the READ AND DRAW BOOK CLUB! This class is presented in a book club atmosphere. Students WILL ABSOLUTELY NEED a copy of the book in some form. We will not be reading the book during live class meetings. Students will read the book on their own outside of class. Students will need to have read the first two chapters of the book on their own before the...
Students will become comfortable discussing their observations about the book with each other. Students will answer specific questions about the text. Students will learn specific drawing techniques directly related to the text they are reading. Students will be given practice in giving and receiving feedback on their artwork.
I am an artist and photographer specializing in fine art, photography, and art education. I am also an avid reader and I love to discuss books and draw out my ideas and perceptions from them. In addition, I am on my 19th year of homeschooling, having homeschooled all four of my children. I have taught children's art classes privately and through local after school and children's museum programs. My photography has appeared in Parents Magazine and numerous photography blogs. I enjoy finding connections between things that don't seem connected upon first glance. To do that, I divide things down to their simplest parts and look for similarities. As a result I am able to break down seemingly complicated projects into simple step by step lessons. I also have a great appreciation for irony in art and life and try to infuse humor and silliness in my lessons and in my own work as well.

Homework will consist of reading the assigned chapters and completing any unfinished drawings. ****NOTE TO PARENTS*** This is primarily an art class in a book club environment. It is NOT a literary analysis class. The Hobbit contains depictions of violence, some discussion of eating other characters, and fighting with dragons, trolls, evil wolves, etc. The Hobbit is a revered classic in Western literature; however, it can prove difficult for younger readers at times. Audiobook versions are available. The language used in the narrative often becomes quite descriptive which can be hard for sensitive learners. This club is best suited for readers who are 12 years old or older. We won't be watching any films based on this novel but we will focus mainly on engaging with the actual text itself in each meeting.
