US Grade 7
For eight weeks, we will read a variety of highly acclaimed books across genres. I have chosen these books to get students excited and engaged with the writing, making them want to share their thoughts with others. The books are all young adult/adult level so please review the books before enrolling your learner if you have concerns about content. Prior to the first meeting, please have your student read the classic novel Lord of the Flies. This class is for the student who devours books, and because of this, we will be reading one book every week and discussing the essential themes in each book. Students who enjoy sharing their thoughts with others will do well in this class. Students who do not like to participate will not enjoy this class or feel very successful with it. I encourage all learners to get their video on and be active on the mic. Every week we meet for a lively discussion that I facilitate. The books we will be discussing are: Week 1 - Lord of the Flies by William Golding Week 2 - The Enigma Game by Elizabeth Wein Week 3 - Six Crimson Cranes by Elizabeth Lim Week 4 - A Face Like Glass by Frances Hardinge Week 5 - The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins Week 6 - A Snake Falls to Earth by Darcie Little Badger Week 7- The A.B.C. Murders by Agatha Christie Week 8 - Skyward by Brandon Sanderson Every time we meet, I will lead a round-table discussion for each book we read. In terms of structure, we will discuss topics ranging from the author's intent to character and plot development. Then we will all share our opinions as we analyze the works. By facilitating the discussion, I will model to the students how to express their thoughts and debate and discuss topics with their peers. Every student in the class will have an opportunity to share their opinion. Please note, we need 5 students to run this book club. Consider sharing the listing after you enroll your student. Thank you!
Learning Goals
Book clubs are a great way to teach students to form and share opinions with others, which are important skills to have as they get older. I run all book clubs so every student can answer questions that I pose and participate in the lively discussion. I am also aware that some students prefer to participate through chat than on a microphone which is entirely acceptable and something I support. My goal for the students is to get them to share their thoughts in whatever way they feel comfortable doing that.
