In a world of seemingly constant change, children might feel worried or anxious. Right Now I Am Fine was written by Dr. Daniela Owen to help children combat their worries through healthy distractions and calming techniques. We will read this wonderful book together and discuss the methods Dr. Owen recommends. We will practice the breathing and hugging strategies, too. Your learner is also encouraged to bring his or her favorite stuffed animal to class to cuddle. Please note, the book does make mention of bad things happening in the world, but does not go into specifics. The illustrations allude to natural disasters, sickness and loneliness. But the author does not dwell on these topics. The majority of the book is hopeful and upbeat.
Learning Goals
My goal in reading and discussing this book is to give each learner some simple coping techniques to help them deal with everyday worries.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi, welcome to my classroom. I'm Marsha Johnson, and I've been teaching young people in some capacity for the last thirty years. I received a bachelor's degree in social studies education with a minor in English in 1993. My summers between college were spent working as a camp counselor, so I was always involved in helping and mentoring children. After many years of classroom teaching, I began homeschooling my own children. That journey ended in May 2020 when my youngest graduated.
My goal in teaching is to provide not just a great educational foundation for all my learners, but to encourage positive character traits that will help them succeed in all areas of their lives. Developing gratitude, choosing joy and showing kindness are qualities I try to emphasize.
Most of my classroom teaching consisted of English and social studies classes to middle schoolers and high schoolers. I particularly loved US history and geography! But as a homeschool mom, I taught all subjects, often researching and creating my own lessons when I couldn't find something to fit my kids' needs. A new love for teaching younger learners was kindled during those homeschooling years. Even though my own children have flown the nest and I'm no longer formally teaching, I still mentor children through outreach programs and church activities.
When I'm not teaching on Outschool, I love to spend time with my family and our three dogs, Tripp, Shiloh and Zahra. I also enjoy a variety of crafts such as scrapbooking, wreath making and designing home decor. If I'm not in my craft room, then you can probably find me reading, probably a historical fiction book - my favorite!
Thanks for stopping by and I hope to see you in my classroom soon!
