Read Aloud Over Lunch: The Purloined Letter

Grab your lunch and listen to one of the short stories that started detective fiction. It’s a bit long so we’ll take two classes to read it.

Class Experience

US Grade 10 - 12
First we’ll talk a little about who Edgar Allan Poe was and then I’ll read out loud the short story The Purloined Letter. After that we’ll discuss the story and any vocabulary the students might not know. Then we’ll talk about the time period the story was written in, the clues that were given, and how the story inspired other writers like Mr. Conan Doyle (who created Sherlock Holmes). Since it’s one of Edgar Allan Poe’s longer short stories we’ll take two classes to read it. We’ll start the second class with some review of what happened before.
Learning Goals
By the end of the class, students will have a good understanding of The Purloined Letter and detective works of literature.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree in English from The Master's College
My name is Miss Rachel. I'm married to a wonderful man, Charlie, and we have three lovely children (whom we are homeschooling). Being an avid reader, I love teaching literature and writing. I have also written a number of children's books and a children's newspaper too. Learning should be fun and classes shouldn't be too long so students can enjoy the class better. My hobbies include exploring, nature, traveling, arts and crafts, going to the beach, and I have lived overseas a number of years before this.
